USING MUSIC TO FIGHT THE OVERDOSE EPIDEMIC

On June 6th, we kickoff the 4th year of the Summer of Recovery Tour! We’ll be in New Castle, Kendallville, Rensselaer, Jasper and Noblesville.

You may wonder - what exactly IS the Summer of Recovery tour?

It is a series of festival-style events featuring live music from the Two Eight band, guest speakers, a DJ, and opportunities for people to connect with local mental health and addiction recovery resources.

Sponsored by Indiana’s Division of Mental Health and Addiction, these are FREE, PUBLIC events are designed to celebrate recovery, inspire hope, build upon Indiana’s already engaging recovery culture, and help lay the groundwork for new sustainable recovery events in key regions of the state.

You may also wonder - why is it important for the state of Indiana to have these events?

In short, it’s to amplify hope.

In 2024, there were 1544 overdose deaths in Indiana, with the majority of them being from opioids. Many thousands more struggle to find freedom from the disease of addiction. Events like these bring awareness, connect people to recovery resources, and proclaim the message that recovery is possible. These events help break the stigma of the addiction, and the stigma of getting help.

On stage, we create a fun, entertaining event in an open, public setting where people can enjoy music, dance, and hear speakers in a family-friendly environment.

Off stage is where the really good stuff happens - connection & community. A common phrase in the recovery is “The opposite of addiction is not recovery…it is community.” Each event has a large area where local organizations and service providers can display their resources and let people know how they can find the next steps on their recovery journey, right there in their community.

Because faith is one of many pathways to recovery, we (and the other presenters) have the freedom to share our faith along with the other recovery pathways. Ultimately, we want to see people move into recovery - and then go from recovery to redemption. Two Eight, along with being the ‘house band’ for the event, provides all the technical production and event support services. We’re able to build relationships with recovery organizations all around the state, and that has led to partnerships where we help them produce their own events apart the state-sponsored tour.

So…
